FlipTech2020 Revisited: Mechanical Design Got Flipped with Joel Huegel

Looking back at FlipTech 2020, applying it to 2021 and beyond.

The Flipped Learning Network hosted a fully-online conference in which presenters from around the world submitted short presentations to be viewed prior to the live discussion portion of the event.  The basic idea was to find a way to share “What works in 2020” with as many people as possible within the pandemic environment.   This series takes a look back at the presentations and some of the conversations from #FlipTech2020.

Mechanical Design Got Flipped

Meet the Presenter:

Joel Huegel serves as Professor of Mechanical Engineering – Leader in Research in Extreme Bionics at Tecnologico de Monterreyen Guadalajara located in Guadalajara, Mexico. He also serves as a Research Affiliate – Biomechatronics, Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA.

About the Presentation:

Upon the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020, schools and faculty worldwide scrambled to launch online teaching and learning. With just a little experience about the flipped learning model, I decided to flip my mechanical engineering design course by recording, posting and requiring students to see the lectures one week in advance. Then, I employed the class time on video conference and online shared whiteboards to complete the math-intensive assignment. Overall, student experience was very positive and learning was not significantly different from a traditional classroom model.

Does this sound like something that you might be interested in developing a presentation for?  Here (potentially) is your chance. The FLN is considering a spring 2021 version of FlipTech and a little further into this series we may be opening an opportunity for you to participate.  For now read, view, and enjoy the articles in this series with an eye to how you might participate later this spring or summer.
