FlipTech2020 Revisited – Standards-Based Grading “For The Win”

Looking back at FlipTech 2020, applying it to the rest of 2020 and beyond.

The Flipped Learning Network hosted an fully online conference where presenters from around the world and submitted short presentations to be viewed prior to the live discussion portion of the event.  The basic idea was to find a way to share “What works in 2020” with as many people as possible within the pandemic environment.   This series takes a look back at the presentations and some of the conversations from #FlipTech2020.

Standards-Based Grading “For The Win”

Standards-based grading (SBG) and flipped-learning click together like Lego bricks! While many colleagues struggled at adapting to a pass-fail system under emergency remote-learning, my students were already trained and prepared for that world. Well before the pandemic, they adjusted their mindset to aim for proficiency (and sometimes beyond) instead of an arbitrary % score. Last year, I developed and refined a 3-column grid — the Mission Tracker — that any teacher could utilize for tracking students’ progress and translating that into a letter grade (which most school still require).
